(Return to Father John's Log!)

OLM
Bishops, Archbishops and Pope All in a Day

When in Rome there are many opportunities to pose with dignitaries. Before our visit with the Holy Father, Bishop John Wester and I visited and he agreed to have his picture taken for the OLM Website. As most parishioners know, he is from Our Lady of Mercy Parish and credits his great education and background in the parish community for his present ministry as Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco.

On Wednesday Evening, September 30, 1998, after Archbishop Levada has his ad limina time with the Pope we were invited to greet Pope John Paul II After each of us was introduced to.
the Pope, we posed for this group picture which identifies all of us in the enlarged version. This was truly an awesome event with the Pope central to the photo and to us as the Church.

Part of an audience with the Pope is the presentation individually and then, after the group picture, the Holy Father presents one with a memento of the visit. In his graciousness, it is evident that this is a good man and one who has the  love of Christ in his heart His pastoral zeal and individual concern are evident in the visit which was congenial and relaxed to say the least about such a momentous event..

Sunday, October 4, 1998, we gathered with Archbishop Levada, Bishop Wester and the other bishops of California, Nevada and Hawaii for the celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assissi. This gathering took place at Santa Susanna which is the church for English Speaking people in Rome especially from the United States. The facade in classic traventine is shown to the left in this space.
