OLM
Parish Reporter EN ROUTE to Rome

FALL 1998

Fr. John checks out NYC

Stop #3a - Visiting Manhattan via Broadway and a long walk.

Part of any visit for me of NYC and the island of Manhattan is always the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, a Non-denominational cathedral which is still being built by the community.
It is awesome in its size and its workmanship as can be seen from the closeup of the facade and also the detail from the right side of the front doors which includes contemporary sculptures of holy men and women in large form topped by colored smaller carvings.
This cathedral is memorable to me because it is still under construction modeling itself on the cathedrals of Europe and their process of being built by craftspeople of many times because the building was under construction for a long time. This building also has many combinations of modern art and traditional church art to decorate and inspire those who visit and worship.

Watch these pages for more intrigue on the WAY TO ROME with FATHER JOHN.
