Free Weekend - Pompeii & Capri

(click on tiny picture to view original)

Ah! The Amalfi Coast

bus squeeze One of the challenges of touring is the bus ride. For the first leg of our three hour trip form Rome to Pompeii we were five across the back of the bus. Now the picture does not do true justice to the closeness of this community! It was a good ride though and good natured fun along the way. bay of naples

Pompeii and Vesuvius

vesuvius
Interesting in the preliminary information about Pompeii and the eruption of Vesuvius was the fact that some 15 or so years before the eruption there was a massive earthquake in the area. This accounted for two things: 1. the fact that there were less people living in Pompeii than at its height and 2. the indications of ruins and rebuilding found by the archaelogists. This factor made for some interesting observations on both the destruction of the volcano and some of the why's of preservation as well as disarray in the remains.

The remains of the people of Pompeii were found when they were excavating and found indications of empty spaces in the remains. The scientists filled these with plaster of paris and were given when they cleared away the debris forms like this one which indicated a person at the time of death.

This particular person probably died of the fumes from which they were trying to escape by covering his mouth and nose. Inside the plaster casts are the bones of the person preserved. It is truly amazing to see these remains and try to empathize with those caught in this horrible natural disaster.
Preserved art 1
In one of the better preserved private homes in the city, we see indications of the wall paintings - frescos - which because of the ash and volcanic debris were preserved in excellent manner. To the left is one wall of a room with indications of decoration and the style of art at the time. To the right a small photo of a detailed depiction of quail or like birds also used as decoration and possibly some sort of indicators on the walls. The notable thing in viewing these remains is the brilliance of the color and detail after hundreds and hundreds of years.

Isle of Capri and The Ride Home

capri 1  The Isle of Capri portrays stunning beauty and sheer heights in the Bay of Naples. It is a town much like those in the greek isles but the homes and villas are larger and many more are situated on the sheer cliffs of the island. The faint of heart cannot make the ride up winding roads on the mini-buses which are the main transport on the Isle along with taxis. Capri Vista 2
Me in Capri
They say proof is in the picture. Unfortunately when we took this lovely photo the sun was in the right position for the scenery but not for me. It is not too clear but I may be thankful for that fact as I try to show a haggard student on tour of religious sites. Ha Ha Ha!
The church in Capri Town, the main town on the island was full for Sunday Noon Mass - Many tourists in town and there was even a cruise ship in the harbor for the day. A baroque type church again and not from the earliest days but they did have a nice choir and good participation in their liturgy.

At the end of a perfect day of sun and sites, the journey home was punctuated by a wonderful sunset. Showing the beauty of the water, the scenery and the setting sun was a perfect end to a weekend of harried at times but enjoyable visiting along this beautiful stretch of God's Creation. Sunset 2
