Convent to Parish Center Conversion
Parishioners Clean on July 18, 1998
On Saturday, July 18, around 60 parishioners gathered in the
OLM Convent to begin the tedious work of cleaning to make the building
ready for use as a Parish Center. There were cleaners, construction workers,
yard cleanup by the Girls Scouts as well as many helpers who prepared a
luscious buffet lunch to revitalize the workers.
After the cleaning was completed in the front section
of the building, trucks were used to move the materials and furniture from
the Religious Education [CCD] rooms in the lower school to their new home
in the Parish Center. With the many hands, strong backs and willing spirits
of the members of our community this work was accomplished in record time.
The day was coordinated by members
of the OLM Stewardship Committee under the direct guidance and supervision
of Teddy Diaz de Rivera, Maureen Colliss, Roberto Marques, John Torres
and Mike Nevin.
Barbara Cantwell of the Westlake Catholic Women again
coordinated the gathering and serving of the luscious lunch.
We thank all who helped and supported our community
again in a way as Msgr. Power always said made and continues to make Our
Lady of Mercy Parish: "Second to None".
As the days move on, various parish organizations
and activities will take place in this new home. Immediately on completion,
the St. Vincent de Paul Society secured a closet to store food and supplies
for the poor as well as having the first meeting in the Parish Center.
The OLM cantor formation sessions are being held
in the Large Meeting/Music Room. On August 1, the OLM Renew Team will host
a workshop for Renew in the Archdiocese in this new Center. Tuesday Nights,
the OLM Prayer Group will hold their weekly meetings in the Center
There are many plans in the works. A Parish Library
is being set up with the eventual possibility of parishioners borrowing
books, videos and other inspirational and faith building materials for
their information and growth.
Plan to attend the inaguration of the OLM PARISH
CENTER on Saturday, August 8 after the 5:30 PM Liturgy for food, drink
and socializing. We will also use this opportunity to welcome Fr. William
Brown as new Parochial Vicar and say Bon Voyage to Fr. John Glogowski as
he prepares to leave on his sabbatical.
