"Mother of God Light In All Darkness" A Modern Icon |
Virgin & Child 2 windows based on Classic Paintings |
The Oratory honoring the Patroness of our Parish is a unique place for prayer and reflection.
The oratory was renovated by Fr. John Ryan in the late 1980's.
This installation, "Mary, Our Lady of Mercy" is the final part of the window beautification
process done by Fr. Manuel Curso, Pastor and Fr. John Glogowski, Parochial Vicar in 1997.
Entering the oratory through doors depicting the Annunciation bring you into direct contact with the back lighted centerpiece of this exhibit: "Mary, Light in all Darkness". This image is taken from a depiction of Mary and Christ in the Byzantine Tradition of Iconography.
This tradition has had many forms in the history of art in the Church. Most recognizable to members of our community is the depiction of Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help. This particular Icon was designed to be solace to those who have lost family to the HIV virus, AIDS. It also provides a center point of comfort and consolation to anyone suffering or dealing with illness and death especially from AIDS and cancer. We place it at the center of our homage to Mary, Our Lady of Mercy, as testimony to the many facets and phases of her role in Salvation History as well as many, many Catholics' devotion and Faith.
